The First “Gathering” – 15 May 2014

Written by  on May 23, 2014

After many months of planning, the big day had arrived. Was it all going to come together as hoped, or was it going to be a disappointment? These were the thoughts of the organising committee (Gilbert Thomas, Martin Fairbairn, Mike Carr, Roly and Debbie Easson) which started to dispel as the day wore on.

The evening before had seen the tape go up on the Community Centre field, and from lunchtime on the day itself it was “all systems go”. The signage was placed on the approaches to and within the village, and at the Community Centre. The parking areas decided and coned or taped off. The Great Gates of Greetham were opened and the first few display vehicles (courtesy of Roly!) were in place. The food tent was erected by Andy Saunders ready to cook the burgers and chips; the bar was stocked and ready with Ruth at the helm, and Maureen Hubbert and Carol Fairbairn were ready with the teas, coffee and cakes – and the weather was beautiful!

As expected the event started slowly, with mainly villagers bringing the first few vehicles, but as tea time approached then so did the number of cars, motorbikes and pedestrians suddenly increase. The range of classic cars was impressive, ranging from a 1910 Rolls Royce, a Model T Ford, many cars from the 60’s and 70’s, some classic British,  Italian and Japanese motorbikes, as well as a tractor and our favourite red Routemaster bus! In all, about 50 classic vehicles were on display, and they were all in outstanding condition. It was pleasing to see so many for the first “Gathering”, and we hope that the informal atmosphere along with the bar, food and teas will make this a “must visit” event in the future months. Many people supported us and we believe that for a first “Gathering” it was an outstanding success. We look forward to the second “Gathering” on July 17th when we hope to have a bigger attendance, so please, come along again and bring some friends (or family!) It’s a fun evening for everyone so do come along.
